losing

12:03 call from Jefferson:
"Zane--you get my msg?" irritated, upset.
"No Jefferson, what's up?"
"All my stuff is gone--all of it."
"What?"
"All my stuff...like I have boxers left. Laptop, DVD, CDs, clothes--it's all gone."
"Where are you?"
"I'm like off early from work to move out of the frat right now and my stuff is gone."

...

"Police are here. Love you Zane. Call you after."
"Hang in there...love you too Jefferson."

12:14 call from Freddie:

another two down...and the sense of loss is is incredible...

"Zane--you know what happened?"
"Yeah, no. What happend?"
"... are in jail."
"What!?"
"Zane...they're in jail."
silence
...
"Love you Freddie."
"Love you too Zane."
silence

and you linger in silence on the phone with your 16 year old son...who is thriving...who is beating the odds--who is winning. that silence...as a parent you want to fly through the phone and reassure him...it'll be ok--he will be ok. and you want to say the words to make it better only they don't exist.

"Freddie, find out where they are."
"Ok." pause, "Zane." and silence.
""Love you Freddie."
"Love you too Zane."
