w/o ill will

"You can be furious," another class member responded, "without having ill will." Just for a moment, everyone paused. And in that moment, I saw how all the traditional stories about respondeding without anger in even the direst circumstances could be recast as metaphors for preserving a heart free from ill will. In a few words, the response differentiated between self-centered, self-serving anger and moral outrage--the vigorous, active, compassionate response of the heart that would care for other human beings as we care for our own kin.
